Profile Information

Dr. van Rensburg was born in Bethlehem in the Free State in 1936.

He obtained the B.Ch.D degree from the University of Pretoria in 1959 and went into private practice in Bethlehem for 5 months. He left for the UK in 1960.

He met his wife Jean in London during 1962. He returned to Pretoria in 1962. Jean came out to join him for their wedding. He practiced in Pretoria until 1970.

Dr. van Rensburg joined the part-time staff of the Dental Faculty of the University of Pretoria in 1963. He served on the staff until 1968 when he enrolled for the H. Dip. Dent at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Professor Arthur Lewin offered a position on the staff in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the School of dentistry at Wits. He accepted the offer and joined the staff in 1970. He continued with his studies and moved through the ranks from Junior Lecturer / Clinician to reach the post of Senior Lecturer/ Prosthodontist in the Department. He left the full time employment of Wits in 1976 to start his own Prosthodontic practice but carried on lecturing in a part time capacity.

Dr. van Rensburg was the first person to be appointed as Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Dentistry at Wits in 1980. He carried on in this position until 1990. He was thus actively involved in dental teaching for 27 years. He acted during that time as an external examiner at the Dental Faculties of Pretoria and Stellenbosch. He was also appointed as an inspector of the SAMDC at both Faculties on two occasions.

He is a Member of the Dental Association. He served on the Branch Committee of the Southern Transvaal as well as a member of the Federal Council for 9 years. He is a founder member of both Prossa and APSA. He served on the executive committees of both societies from the position of secretary to President Elect and President. He was President of APSA for two separate terms of office.

He has been very active in the organization of many courses and congresses of the various Associations. He was the Chairman of the organising committee of the Third International Congress of Prossa and served on the organising committee of the Dental Congress at Sun City in 1992.

He has presented over 40 scientific papers throughout the World and is the author and co-author of 23 publications.

He retired from full time practice in 2005 and moved to Cape Town. He is now practicing on a part time basis in Parklands, Milnerton. He is presently involved with the West Coast dental study group.
